Market Scene: Pumpkin Man
I was at the market few days ago and saw some pumpkins. What intrigued me was a Greek lady asked me what would I do with my pumpkin.
I just realized that only two stalls were selling pumpkins. I have not thought much of Greeks using this vegetable. I did notice that pumpkins started coming out when most Asians sought for it. That when I eat out I do not see pumpkins on the menu.
Also they use the word KOULOUKITHIA.. same word they used for courgettes. Am going to dig my Greek cookbooks later on.
Speaking of books, this is the reason I have not respond to any comments on this blog. I have been sorting all our books (for once all our things are here in Athens and not in UK… just emptied my last box that came from Norway too).
What would you do with you pumpkin?
Στιγμιότυπα…moment
I’m intrigued by the pumpking man 🙂 hahaha!
Sha,
That’s a lot of work – what is he doing with the pumpkin anyway and what’s cooking on your kitchen? take care…
JMOM:you are bad 😉
TIN: here in Athens you dont buy the WHOLE PUMPKIN basically I showed him the thickness that is why he is cutting that moment I took the pic. Then he weighs it. At the same time I had the greek lady asking me how I cook them!
By the way this is not from the main market this is from a weekly farmers market so he grows this pumpkin
I cant stand going to the main market YOU CAN SMELL, YOU CANT TOUCH… and the stall owners are very haughty
I prefer this weekly FARMERS market!!!
Hmmm pumpkin surprise… what are you cooking Sha?
Ginata?
Ginisa?
I can’t wait to see what you’ve done with it.
Very interesting Sha! Pumpkin is very popular here, I can not imagine life without pumpkin 🙂 Hugs,
M
Ate Sha thanks for tip about my comments thingy. fixed it already and its looks spanking nice.

goodluck sha 🙂
My friend Maria who lives at the moment at Baku, Azerbaijan and had lived in Africa for a while sent me an email
“In Africa they use it all the time, as a stew with meat or without. Otherwise, boiled and cut into cubes or mashed and served next to their BBQ.”
she also sent me 3 recipes
one which I do all the time
ROASTED PUMPKIN SOUP
ROASTED APPLE & PUMPKIN SOUP
PUMPKN CAKE
OK since Mae is curious I dont do much pumpkin the Filipino way of cooking it with coconut. I find coconut too rich.
But since Des suggested ALIMASAG (CRABS) with pumpkin I might as well do that, here is the but…
Pumpkin is going off season soon and crab is not season now unless I will buy frozen ones…
Des I will take note of that
As DEXIE mentioned PUMPKIN PIE..
Yes when I saw those there were only two things that came to my mind.
1) The american PUMPKIN PIE (using canned pumpkin which is not available here). Saveur Magazine No88 Nov issue has pumpkin pie on its cover. Since then I have been dreaming of creating one
2)I saw a recipe called CITROUILLAT Pumpkin PASTY a french recipe with lots of double cream, egg yolk and milk.
BEFORE I CAN DO ALL THESE THE TEMPERATURE DIPPED SO LOW THAT ONCE I CAME IN I SAT DOWN, HAD TEA AND WHILE MY LEGS WERE DEFROSTING… not kidding when I say de frosting….
I just needed A BOWL OF SOUP. I made CREAMY PUMPIN SOUP.
As for the rest of you.. I told my Greek friend that seems the girls found this pumpkin man cute. He said ahh he is not greek he must be Albanian. Hohoho!!!!
MELISSA: we call this kalabasa in our language 😉
AVIVA: What you Aussies do?
I don’t eat this at all, that yellow soft thing makes me want to puke. I just don’t get it. I know this makes one healthier, good for the ‘eyes’ pero sa Bicol, my Dear Ma cook this with gata or ginisa sa hipon, pinipili ko lang hipon.
Is that in a wet market? Mga model-looking ang mga tindero.
Hayyy, you must be a great CHEF.
hello sha! my ma used to steam cubes of it then mashed it with raw garlic and vinegar and ground blk pepper…she also did the same with grilled eggplants or steamed camote tips/spinach.
but that pumpkin looks solid and beautiful…where are the “buhok” fibers and seeds?
CHEF STEL: this pumpkin has no seeds (well maybe it the end part when I got there)…. its sort of the neck shaped part already.. the “bell” must have been sold earlier
thanks for sharing.. that quickie recipe
Love this photo! You’re really a great photographer! (My Canon SLR analog camera is kaputt, and I’m not really a digital camera person. Our digital cams are so underused. So my photo blog is now almost in its R.I.P. stage. LOL.)
I don’t eat kalabasa pala. But maybe I should. Single pa ba si Pumpkin Man?
What a great choice Sha.
Cut the pumpkin into cubes and fry the pieces with dried baby shrimps…mmmm..slurp..
I haven’t cooked anything with pumpkin in it. Know any easy and good recipes? 🙂 Yung pang-amateur lang ha!
yes, I’d like to know the pumpkin man. . .he’s hot.
I like to chunk up the pumpkin and put it in a nice root-veggie winter stew.
I love pumpkin pie!
