Moments: HOME COOKING
Lombok is a mix of ethnic Indonesian but majority of the people are Sasak Muslim.
One compound in the heart of the city are “immigrants” from the neighbouring Bali, where they form their close knit community. We got invited to this small community and this man was preparing our Bali feast for that day!
Mataram, Lombok, INDONESIA
Think Lombok is the next famous island destination in Indonesia after Bali.
MOONS AGO, I once had an Indonesian internet guy friend who invited me over to Yogyakarta and told me I (or we? haha) should go to Lombok. I found out later that the punk was married, HAHAHA. See what people do with internet chats.
Hey..Schatzli,
Lombok is nice.. 🙂
This photo looks extremely familiar. Of course, it is near to where I live!
Lombok is a nice idyllic place, very near to Bali.
I hope to visit Bali this year end.
Unlike the rest of Indonesia, there are many Hindus in Bali.
Ooops, I was just re-reading my post. It looked like I went to see Mr. married Indonesian, haha. Soweee, NO I never went to see him. But Dutchman and I would love to go visit Bali and Lombok in the future… though we are a bit afraid of the insurgencies there.
Here in NL, Chinese food taste like, guess what, INDONESIAN. Nasi Goreng (Indonesian Rice) and BAMI (Indonesian noodle) are almost a legend here, the Dutch have adapted many of their local cuisine to Indonesian Cuisine. Guess it’s because of the spice trade… the Dutch traded a lot of Indies spices centuries ago and up to now. They have occupied Indonesia for sometime and were defeated in the war, just like US and Vietnam. But a lot of Dutch people became rich from the spice trade. I am sure you know these since you are also a history geek!
And did you know that there are Indonesians in Indonesia who can speak Dutch? And majority of the Asians in NL are Indonesians?
frau sha, what did the guy cook for you??? must have been good, AUTHENTIC!
I think the prices in Bali are at about its lowest now. There are so many promotion packages now that the prices are a steal.
I don’t think there is any real concern about another terrorist attack. But there is no insurgency there.
Dutched P: Yes I know about Holland and Indonesia…History Buff? Not really but I do enjoy the learning. Georgraphy and History were the best grades I had in school.Though we did a lot of Napoleon, Austro Hapsburg Empire and a lot of Ottoman. Not much of Asia but…. when I travel to a new destination, I read not just what to see and what to do, I READ THE HISTORY of the place as well.
BAYI:Got your email (perhaps it both!!!)
We actually meant to go to Bali but that time we stopped at the main office of Singapore Airlines in Athens (to chit chat with the staff, happen to get to know them well when a friend left with a dog and I handled all the paper work)
Well they all have been to both islands but they all have agreed that Lombok still have the feel of a province and the blend of the people make the place interesting.
WE were looking for a combination of hiking, diving and food not much of the night life since we spent a whole summer in South Of France.
So we got sold Lombok we could have gone to Bali for few days but we spent going to places where its not on the tourist destination.
Bali at the lowest? Well we have planned for Philippines at the end of the year. though…Botswana (Africa) is on the card too..
STEL: Ih ave forgotten the names (well its on my diary in Athens) one thing I could not forget was the kangkong with tons of chilies.
We also had breadfruit salad and mince meat bbq with spices I have never ever heard of. It was great and we sat on the floor eating with our hands!
At least for the moment Bali seems to be located away from most of the fault lines where most of the earthquakes happen and where one earthquake recently caused a tsunami. That’s why it is probably the most popular destination in Indonesia now.
I had originally thought of visiting Cyprus or Turkey after Greece in June but time constraints have limited my travel this round. In August I hope to visit southern Thailand at least once more bebore the present unrest spreads. Hopefully Bali in December. And China or Vietnam next year.
Do you miss balut? I hear that it is also available in Singapore now.
